Oklahoma football notebook: Jay Norvell says Jalen Saunders is an NFL prospect

BY JASON KERSEY

Oklahoma co-offensive coordinator Jay Norvell said there’s no question that senior receiver Jalen Saunders is a potential NFL prospect, despite his small size.

Norvell would know; he spent several years in the NFL coaching with the Indianapolis Colts and Oakland Raiders.

Bedlam football: How OU and OSU have fared in the Bedlam spoiler role

BY BERRY TRAMEL

Since World War II, only twice has OU been reduced to spoiler status entering a season-ending Bedlam football game.

The Cowboys are well-tuned to the spoiler role, having 14 times been placed in position to ruin OU bids of a conference title, a major bowl or national championship contention.

OU AS SPOILER: 1-1

2009: OSU was in position for a Fiesta Bowl berth with a victory, but OU won 27-0.

1945: The Cowboys entered with an unbeaten record and won 47-0.

OSU AS SPOILER: 1-13

2008: OU needed to win to forge a three-way tie for the Big 12 South title and hope to win a BCS tiebreaker.

OU football: Football keeps Feo family apart — for now

BY RYAN ABER, Staff Writer, raber@opubco.com

NORMAN — Tony Feo knows he’s been fortunate as it relates to football.

The Sooners offensive lineman took up the sport as a freshman in high school, following in the footsteps of his older brother, Etu.

“Football has given us a lot of opportunities,” Tony said.

Oklahoma basketball: Cameron Clark’s 22 points lead Sooners to win over Arkansas-Little Rock

BY RYAN ABER

NORMAN — At Big 12 Media Days before the season, Oklahoma senior forward Cameron Clark talked at length about extending his shooting range.

Friday against Arkansas-Little Rock, Clark showed that extended range off at home, hitting four 3-pointers and scoring a game-high 22 to lead the Sooners to a 101-81 win in front of 4,975 at Lloyd Noble Center.

“I couldn’t even tell you,” Clark said when asked when the last time he attempted eight 3-pointers in a game.

Oklahoma basketball: Jordan Woodard hits career high

By Ryan Aber

Freshman point guard Jordan Woodard scored a career-high 16 points and added four assists and just one turnover in Oklahoma’s 101-81 win over Arkansas-Little Rock on Friday.

“I’m feeling pretty comfortable right now,” Woodard said.

He certainly looked it, scoring seven consecutive OU points just past the midway point of the first half to help the Sooners extend their lead.

“I think Jordan’s doing a great job,” Sooners forward Cameron Clark said.

Oklahoma Sooners Eclipse Century Mark, Routes UALR Trojans 101-81

In the beginning, it was the Oklahoma Sooners dictating the pace over the Arkansas Little-Rock Trojans. With a commanding 23 point lead in the first half, Lon Kruger and his squad went into cruise control as boredom set in. The result was a strong offensive performance by the Sooners. But, it was the defense that suffered as UALR fought their way to a 10-2 run to end the half down 59-44.

During the second half, Oklahoma maintained a double-digit lead over their opponent, never trailing. The Sooners hit the century mark as they won by twenty, 101-81, behind a 46% shooting effort.

The Good

This is a team that has latched on to the attack mentality. With a few rule changes heading into this season, the opportunity for an astronomical number of free throw attempts are there for the taking. Oklahoma possesses a handful of players with the ability to create shots for themselves. That feature alone leads to an slight hand up when it comes to getting to the charity stripe. So far this season, Lon Kruger has his squad attempting 29 free throws per game.

Cameron Clark is now a senior and has finally found his stride. Throughout his first three seasons as a Sooner, this explosive yet versatile player struggled to produce on a consistent basis. The journey sat him down on the bench which seemed to fan a flame as Clark has some of his best showings under Lon Kruger. Just six games into the season and Clark is now having the best start of his career. In the past three games, this physically gifted combo players has poured in at least 20 points as “consistency” has become his middle name.

Finally, as a fan, you must appreciate the the hustle and fight of this team once again. With just over two minutes left in regulation, bodies were flying all over the floor in an effort to contain a loose ball.

The Bad

At times, the UALR Trojans were able to exploit a weakness in Oklahoma. This so called weakness has manifested itself in communication during half-court defense. There were multiple occasions in which the Sooners flooded the lane in an attempt to stop the drive. However, in the shift, an opposing player is left open around the three-point line for a wide open shot attempt. Of course, this is an issue that can be fixed with time as OU is a young team starting two newcomers, a pair of sophomores, and a lone senior.

Top Performers

Arkansas-Little Rock: Although Will Neighbour got off to a slow start, he finished the game with a team high 16 points to go alongside 8 rebounds.

Oklahoma Sooners: As Lon Kruger cleared his bench, he had all five starters coming to the sideline with double-digits in scoring headlined by Cameron Clark. On the afternoon, Clark finished with a game high 22 points as he has found his groove.

Ryan Spangler continues to shoot the ball well connecting on 5-of-7 attempts for 11 points. One thing he may need to do more often is take a shot when he has the ball in his hands. However, what sets him apart is the uncanny ability to pull down rebounds. Recording another double-double on the season, Spangler grabbed 10 boards.

Jordan Woodard had himself a career type game with 16 points and four assists.

“Three The Hard Way” finished with a collective 38 points (Buddy Hield – 17, Isaiah Cousins – 14, Je’lon Hornbeak – 7).

Up Next

The Oklahoma Sooners will face a 4-3 Mercer squad at 8:00 PM CST on Monday in Norman, Oklahoma.

Friday Locks Takes On The Civil War By Taking The Beavers And The Points

Typically its Jordan and Rich weighing in on the same game during our Friday Locks series but this time its Rich and myself…and we’re on the same side of the Oregon/Oregon State rivalry. Meanwhile Jordan weighs in on the big rivalry game in the Big Ten.

Rich

Jordan

Ohio State (-14.5) at Michigan – Big number for a rivalry game, but Michigan look horrible this year.

Baylor (-12) at TCU – I can’t help but feel this line is an extreme overreaction to the Bears’ poor performance in Stillwater.

West Virginia (-8) vs. Iowa State – Weird things happen in Morgantown.

Rich

Baylor (-12) vs TCU – There is no doubt that the Horned Frogs have struggled all season long to find an identity. Baylor will likely roll in this one.

Penn St. (+24) vs Wisconsin – The Badgers may be the most underrated team in the country. However they like to control the clock so give me the points on this one.

Oregon St. (+23) vs Oregon – Simply put, you never know what you are going to get from an in state rivalry game but it certainly won’t be a blowout.

Matt

Oregon State (+23) at Oregon – The Ducks’ season has taken a turn south over the last month but that’s not the motivation behind my pick. This is a rivalry game and, despite Oregon needing to prove some things, Oregon State is deceptively good.

South Florida (+27) at Central Florida – I guess I’m just a sucker for big time road dogs.

Duke (+5.5) at North Carolina – The classic basketball rivalry moves from the hardwood to the gridiron and the wrong team is favored.

Tell us where you stand on these games and others in the comments section below.

Oklahoma basketball: Jordan Woodard settles in with Sooners

By Ryan Aber

NORMAN — Jordan Woodard isn’t much for getting fazed by pressure.

It certainly didn’t get to him last week in Brooklyn against Seton Hall.

Woodard was right in the middle of the Sooners’ comeback from a six-point deficit in the final minute.

Woodard came up with a critical steal right in the middle of that last-minute comeback, drawing a foul and hitting a free throw to pull OU closer.

This is nothing new for Woodard, the freshman point guard from Edmond Memorial.

“He’s got that gamesmanship,” Sooners coach Lon Kruger said.

Report: Trevor Knight to get start at QB for Sooners

While Bob Stoops won’t be ready to publicly name a starting quarterback until Saturday, one report has decided to get ahead of signal-calling curve. The Daily Oklahoman, citing a source close to the program, reported Wednesday that Trevor Knight will start for Oklahoma Saturday in its game against Kansas State.  Blake Bell, who took over…

Oklahoma football: Sooners get a jump on Bedlam

By Ryan Aber and Jason Kersey

In preparation for next week’s game in Stillwater, Oklahoma started installing its game plan for Oklahoma State earlier this week instead of waiting for Monday.

“We’re doing it just like a normal week,” Sooners co-offensive coordinator Jay Norvell said.

MBB | Opponent Preview: Arkansas-Little Rock Trojans

After a short hiatus, the Oklahoma Sooners will take to the hardwood during the Thanksgiving break. Losing to the No. 1 team in the country has Lon Kruger and his crew ready to get back to work. This time they are eyeing the Arkansas-Little Rock Trojans in front of a welcomed home crowd.

The Opponent

A 17-15 season is not exactly something to be proud of as the Sun Belt Conference continues to experience change. Sustained success will be tough to come by but none is more poised to do so than Trojans Head Coach Steve Shields. There will certainly be a few bumps along the way, however Shields’ team began to put it together late last season.

Arkansas-Little Rock loses a major contributor in John Gillon. While the kid led the way in three-point attempts and makes for the Trojans, Gillon has decided to take his talents elsewhere. Yet, the area where he will likely be missed the most is in free throw attempts. It became a staple of Gillon and his game, although just a freshman, as he made a name for himself as the second leading scorer.

That means the scoring responsibility will fall squarely on Will Neighbour, the teams best returning player. At 6-10, this is a senior that outsizes much of his competition and knows how to make the best of each situation. Neighbour currently averages 18.8 points on 58.5% shooting from the field.

Behind him will be Josh Hagins who struggled early on during his freshman year. After gaining some confidence, this point guard hit a bit of a stride as he found himself to be the starter. Currently he averages 12.2 points per game along with 3.6 assists. The biggest area of improvement undoubtedly manifests itself in turnovers. Committing 2.6 per game in 26 minutes of play may jump against stiffer competition.

Projected Starting Five:

Josh Hagins, Sophomore, Guard

Ben Dillard, Junior, Guard

Leroy Isler, Senior, Forward

Will Neighbour, Senior, Forward

James White, Sophomore, Forward

By the Numbers:

Scoring Offense: 72

Field-Goal Percentage: 41.2

Three-Point Field-Goal Percentage: 32.9

Free-Throw Percentage: 74.0

Rebounds Per Game: 37

Assists Per Game: 10

Turnovers Per Game: 12

The Game

The game will tip off November 29th at 2:00 PM CST and can be viewed on Sooner Sports TV.

Thanksgiving Day Open Thread | Celebrating Turkeys And Touchdowns!

Today is a day to pause, give thanks, enjoy delicious food, and watch wall-to-wall football

Okay, first things first. How do you like your turkey? There’s the traditional baked in the oven turkey like grandma used to make it for you. There’s the deep fried turkey in peanut oil, or there’s the smoke it for eight hours outside in the smoker, so that your neighbors know full well that you are the man, turkey. How is your turkey being prepared today and what are your special recipes/turkey traditions?

BTW – I’m typing this just before 4:30 am and have just put my turkey in the smoker

Thanksgiving is about giving thanks for the things you’ve been blessed with and are able to share with those you love and we certainly don’t want to belittle the true meaning of the holiday whatsoever. However, right along with enjoying a scrumptious turkey themed meal, another of the long standing traditions is watching the football games that highlight the holiday.

As you slip off into your tryptophan induced coma with visions of Tony Romo flashing on your television screen, we’ll be here today to talk both the turkeys and the touchdowns. Make sure to check in every now and then to tell us what you’re thankful for on this day, how your turkey turned out and what your opinions are on the football games.

Thanksgiving Day Football Schedule

11:30 – Green Bay at Detroit (FOX)

3:30 – Oakland at Dallas (CBS)

6:30 – Texas Tech at Texas (Fox Sports 1)

Oklahoma football: Merv Johnson finds solace in work after his wife’s death

BY JASON KERSEY

NORMAN — Merv Johnson sat in the broadcast booth Saturday, Oct. 5, providing color commentary throughout Oklahoma’s 20-17 win over TCU in the familiar, soft voice Sooner fans have grown accustomed to the past 16 seasons.

Judging purely from Johnson’s analysis that night of OU’s stellar first-half defensive performance; TCU’s second-half rally; and Brennan Clay’s electric 76-yard, fourth-quarter touchdown run, you’d never know the pain he experienced that very morning when his wife of 53 years, Cindy, was removed from life support.

“I didn’t notice any difference at all,” said OU play-by-play announcer Toby Rowland.

Report: Two Sooner offensive starters won’t play vs. K-State

As Oklahoma continues its push toward a 12th double-digit win season in 15 years under Bob Stoops, the Sooners will be without two of its top offensive playmakers.  Reportedly.
